ALLEGED THEFT OF POSTAL PACKETS.
(by telegraph-press association.) u DUNEDIN, Oct. 14. Charged with. stealing 131 postal packages on September 21, George Ellis, a clerk in the Post Office, appeared m the City Police Court to-day. He reserved liis defence and was committed for trial.
EX-POSTMASTER ADMITS THEFT CHARGES.
ROTORUA, Oct. 14
At the Magistrate’s Court, before Justices of the Peace, Frederick John Heerdegen, formerly postmaster at Ngo ngotaha, was charged with six offences. (1) On or about August lu, 1927, Ngongotaha, being in possession of Ed) as an officer gf the Government, lie stole the sum of £3O; (2) on or about July j°, 3927, he stole £200; (2) on or about September 22, 1927, he attempted to steal £9O;. (4) on or about Septembei 22 1927, lie stole £10; (5) on or about Tune 27 1927, he store £25; on or about Julv 15,’ 3927, he stole £lO. Detective J. 11. Sweeney prosecuted on behalf of the police, and accused was represented by counsel from it Puke. The detective said he understood accused would plead guilty, and counsel endorsed this. Lengthy evidence was given in support of the charges and medical testimony regarding the accused’s state ot mind and body. . At the conclusion of the hearing the Bench decided to commit the accused to the Auckland Supreme Court for sentence on the six charges.
