EDUCATION BOARDS.

LATE EDITION

POWER BEING REDUCED

GOVERNMENT INTENTIONS CRITICISED.

(BY TBLEGHAPH -PBBBS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 5. “They can’t wipe us out by Act of Parliament, and now they are going to ask us to commit suicide,” said Mr. A. Burns this morning when the Education Board had before it a lettei from the Minister of Education asking for the views of the board regarding the suggestion that the control ot training colegos be transferred from boards to the Education Department. “They treat us more like children than men and women,” continued Mr. Burns. “They are trying, little by little, to relieve us of our work and duties, and if they have their own way we will be whittled down to nothing at all.” Correspondence was also read from other boards objecting to the Government proposals to abolish boards and concentrate everything at Wellington under the department. The chairman referred to the unanimity among boards, and pointed out that they would get far more by being united. ' He mentioned -an Education Boards’ Association, but pointed out that it could only be formed if called together by the Minister, and if its deliberations were carried out in presence of the Minister and departmental officers this perhaps. would not allow of such free discussion as was desirable. The board decided to leave it to the chairman to answer the Minister, opposing the- transfer of control of training colleges.
