PIG HUNTER’S TROPHY
fi.IOA.NTTC YOUNG BARROW
According to reports, pigs are ill great numbers up the Wanganui River. That they are not quite extinct nearer Havvera was proved during the last week-end. when three parties of Hawera sportsmen hunting in the back country towards the Paten River, accounted for thirty-one pigs. Included in the number was a huge “barrow'’ shot by one of a party of three hunters operating in the Opaku district. The taking oi a barrow in this district is a distinctly rare occurrence, and only once previously has this been recorded from the particular locality referred to.
Homo idea of the size of this brute may lie gained’ .rum the tact that the hunters packed out one hundred and seventy pounds of prime pork. The lower jawbone, with tusks embedded, was shown to a “.Hawera Star” reporter, and it was noted that over three inches of vicious looking ivory protruded lrom the bone. lhe lower jaw hone measured 14 inches in length. The body measured 6ft. Gin. from snout to tail, and was estimated to weigh about three hundred pounds live weight. Over two inches of fat lay under the skin on the hack, and noted Hawera hunters agree that such a pig is the “take” of a lifetime.
