REPUBLICANS AND THE OATH
BY CABLE- PRESS ASSOCIATION — Y t.GHT LONDON, Oct. 3. The Dublin correspondent of “The Times” says the Roman Catholic hierarchy’s recent pastoral denouncing perjury has attracted widespread attention, but it is pointed out that it- cannot undo the recent elections, at which 411,0C)0 citizens voted for the party that regards the oath of allegiance- as an empty formula of no practical importance. 'This position now -affects 57 elected Republicans, 4 * who will be required to take the oath next week a-s a. condition of their entering the Da.il. It is anticipated that all of them will repeat oath as an empty formula. Mr P. Rutledge, a prominent supporter of Mr de Valera, in -a speech, said that the party demanded peace and recognising that Ireland should master her own affairs without interference from outside, the party refused to recognise the obligations with England as binding.
