COMPETITIONS AT CAMBRIDGE. (by telegraph—press association.) CAMBRIDGE, Oct, 4. The fifth annual Cambridge competitions festival commenced yesterday most auspiciously. The entries total 510, easily a record for the society. Competitions from all parts of the province were present. The attendance was excellent. The adjudicators are: Vocal and instrumental music, Mr. Temple White, Wellington; elocution, Mrs. Bartley Baxter, Auckland. The festival closes on Friday night. EDUCATION IN PACIFIC ISLANDS AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. Satisfactory progress has been shown in the development of the New Zealand educational system in Western Samoa, Fiji and Niue Islands, says Mr. Caughley, ex-Director of Education, who to-day returned from a visit of investigation to the Islands on behalf of the Government.
OTL BORING. GISBORNE, Oct. 4. Taranaki Oilfields, Ltd., report: Waiapu No. 2 well drilled to a depth of 2273 feet in shale; 8-Jin. diameter casing down to 2260 feet, Gisborne No. 1 well: No drilling in progress; running additional lojin. diameter casing to 340 feet.
BIBLE-IN-SOHOOLS COMMITTEE. 'WELLINGTON, Oct. 4. Eviednce was given to-day before the Bible-in-Schools Committee on behalf of the Congregational Churches. It was stated that previously these churches were opposed to the Bill, but seeing the disadvantages of the secular system they were now in favour of it “to a man.”
