EGMONT RACING CLUB.

AMENDMENTS TO RULES. RESOLUTIONS CONFIRMED. Eighty-six members were in attendance at a special general meeting of the Egmont Racing Club held at Hawera last evening to consider the question of confirming the various amendments to the club rules which were approved at a general meeting held on August 24, as reported in ‘‘The Hawera Star” of the following day. No discussion was taken, the business of the meeting being confined to voting on separate issues. The attendance showed an increase of 29 as compared with the previous meeting, and the balance in favour of the most contentious issues—those amending the system or election of officers and increasing the proportion of adverse votes necessary to reject a candidate for membership—showed an increase, while each of the other amendments was also confirmed. Air J. Gray presided. ‘ ‘The election of officers of the club shall be held at the annual general meeting by a general ballot of members present who are entitled to vote.” On this proposed new form of rule 32 (the effect of which would be to supersede the previous system of voting with ballot papers distributed prior to the annual meeting) Mr. A. Good appealed for a ballot after a count of hands had shown 47 votes for and 34 against its confirmation. The ballot increased the majority, the count of papers disclosing 54 votes for and 32 against. The confirmation was accordingly declared carried. The only other question on which a ballot was asked for was the amendment of rule 27 so as to provide that one adverse vote in three, instead of one in seven, be required to exclude a person nominated for membership. The ballot disclosed similar voting, 54 being cast for and 32 against the confirmation. “That rule 11 be deleted and the following be substituted : ‘No member whilst holding office under the provisions of rule 30 shall be eligible as a paid official of the club’.” This amendment was declared carried on a show of hands, which gave a decided, majority. The replacement of rules 33, 36, and 40 (as previously reported), being the machinery clauses to give effect to the new system of voting, was also confirmed.

Confirmation was also given on the show of hands to the new forms of rules hi 24, 24a, and 25, dealing with the procedure in voting; the amendment of rule 41 to provide that while the annual meeting shall be held in July, the date may be fixed by the committee; the alteration of rule 49 so as to provide -that medical officers, veterinary surgeons, and time-keepers may be paid or honorary positions; and the addition of rule 18a providing that any member who has voluntarily resigned shall upon re-election he exempt from payment of membership fee.
