Timms, who lias done so well with Te Kara has a two-year-old halfbrother by Lueullus, to the fine- handicap performer. Pegaway, who is in the same stable as Te Kara, is being got ready for handicaps to be decided later. When at h'is best Pegaway is a. first-class performer. Freehold, Tamatete’s brother, had every chance in the Avondale Stakes last Saturday, but he galloped somewhat green. lie is sure to win races this season. Although Laughing Prin"c failed to gain a “place” in the Flying Stakes on Saturday last, his performance was quite satisfactory and should not lose him any friends. Evidently, Vivo cannot handle bad going, as after showing excellent form at Wanganui, she did not do anything like so well at Ellerslie last Saturday. However it may be stated that she got away last of the fifteen starters.

Several horses fell in flat events at Ellerslie last Saturday. It is just as well these falls did not occur on the Takapuna course or that track would again come in for severe centure from a certain section.

Star God, the younger brother to Star Stranger, recently injued a leg that will put him back a few weeks. After examining the race track at Ellerslie last Saturday, Trainer Jefferd decided not to risk Star Stranger and Knightlike, hence both were withdrawn. Something went wrong with High Pitch’s gear at Ellerslie and in going back he interfered with Benzora, pushing that gelding right back. Soveua ran her best; race at Ellerslie last Saturday and was very unlucky in not winning instead of running a close second to War Officer, who is better now than at any previous stage of liis career. On Saturday last the race track at Ellerslie bore the appearance of the Great Northern season, being as heavy as one usually finds it for the meeting held there in. June.

Laughing Prince, in the past has proved such a great performer on heavy c-curses that despite liis 8.6 (a good load for a three-year-old) many selected 'him as good for the big sprint event at. Saturday’s Avondale meeting. He jumped •out well and was well placed all the way, but the weight beat him. Looking particularly well, Transformer ran quite as well and even better than expected at the Avondale meeting last Saturday. On the showing Transformer is one to be remembered for the coming meetings on northern courses.

Although Town Guard registered an attractive performance to win at Ellerslie last. Saturday he was somewhat lucky, for had Delightment not received a bad run he and not Town Guard must have won the Flying Stakes.

As the horses were racing to the final jump in the hurdle race at Ellerslie last Saturday a stray dog rushed out, and interfering with York Abbey, caused that, gelding to fall. Up till that stage York Abbey had run a good race. ■Oovent Garden and Thaw showed speed in their respective races at the Avondale meeting last Saturday, but both stopped badly over the concluding stages. 'Possibly the heavy going and their not being fully wound up was the cause of the sudden collapse.

Prodice (Catmint-llyades), who won the Avondale 'Stakes last Saturday, is. a full sister to Phaola, who also won the same event two years ago. Prodice whs a strong tip from the right, quarter and scored in an attractive manner. Freehold did not gallop as expected in the Avondale Stakes. He gave L. Morris some trouble during the running, and ran more “green” than expected. Had Freehold done his work properlv he may have beaten Prodice, despite the faet'tliat that filly won nicely. While the trainer of Kniglitlike thinks this sou of Paladin will develop in something extra good lie does not consider him likely to be a champion as a two-vear-old, contending that Kniglitlike is not brilliant enough over the first few furlongs to become an extra special youngster. ’Still, Knightlike is even now above the average. Te Monanui looked well when sent out to ‘contend the Avondale Cup last Saturday. Potoa’s son was well placed over the first nine, but from that on liis chance looked nil as he drifted back and was well beaten at the end. This far Te Monanni lias not shown the improvement some of us expected. Possible. big weights and ‘soft courses are responsible for Lis disappointing form.
