CONDUCT OF DANCES. (by telegraph—press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. On .'account of complaints received regarding the conduct of persons attending certain dances at the Art Gallery, the City Council decided last night to cancel the license issued to the gallery as a public building for the conduct of dances. The report of the committee was as follows: “For some time past the committee has been receiving serious complaints as to the conduct of persons who attend certain dances held at the Art Gallery. Flrom inspections made it i:s felt that the complaints are justified and the committee therefore recommends that the. license issued in respect of the Art Gallery as 'a public building be cancelled.”.

LEGAL ACTION PROBABLE. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. As the result of the closing of the Art Gallery for dances, the secretary of the Art Society says that legal action is probable to oppose the council’s ruling. He contends that the council s letter in regard to. the icon duct of people attending the dances is libellous and certainly “a gross injustice.” TARIFF AND CINEMA FILMS. W ELLINGTON, Sept, 27. A request that the proposed preferential tariff on cinema films be postponed, pending a full inquiry into the whole of the film business in New Zealand, was made to the Hon. W. D. Stewart this .morning by a deputation from the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors’ Association. T!he Minister said that lie would, confine his reply to the fact that the whole position was being carefully reviewed, and that within a few days, when the tariff became known, they would see the decision theat the Government had arrived at.

DAMAGES AWARDED. . WELLINGTON, Sept, 27. Judgment for the plaintiff for £64 with costs was given by Air. Riddell, S.M.to-day in the case of Mr. Winter, a. linesman, against the British Imperial Oil Company in respect to a collision between his motor car and one driven by an employee of defendants. The magistrate said that defendants’ car had swerved, and had given the plaintiff no opportunity to. avoid a collision.
