LONDON HOUSING

MEETING THE SHORTAGE. STEEL AND WOODEN BUILDINGS. LONDON, Sept. 10. Substantial progress is being made with the erection of steel and wooden houses on the Watling estate of the London County Council. The wooden houses are all of tne type designed by Mr. Topham Forrest, chief architect to the London County Council, and according to practical builders who have inspected them they are likely to he durable and weatherproof for many years to come. In addition, over 200 steel houses of the type devised by the Duke, of Atholl are being erected. This is the onlv type of steel house that has been adopted by the London County Council, and as the parts are standardised it is proving easy to erect rapidly. In order to reduce to the minimum all risks of fire, the block of steel houses are built in. between the timbei houses.
