HOCKEY.
ELTHAM CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Wanganui ladies and men’s hockey teams which, visited Eltliam on Saturday for a friendly match with the Eltham and Stratford teams were entertained at a social evening by the members of the Eltham Hockey Club in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday. There was a large attendance. Opportunity was taken at the function of presenting Mr. C. H. Pennington with an enlargement of the Eltham hockey team for 1926, which won the competition for the year. Mr. Pennington has acted as chairman of the local committee for many _ years, and has always taken a keen interest in the game of hockey. Mr. H. C. Johnson, who made the presentation on behalf of the Eltham Club, made reference to the valued work done by the recipient on behalf of hockey generally. Mr. A. Jackson, hon. secretary to the Taranaki Hockey Association and also of the Eltham Club, who is leaving Eltham for New Plymouth, was also made the recipient of a handsome cigarette case and holder from the Eltham Hockey Club. The Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger), at the request of the club, made the presentation, and referred to the excellent work of. Mr. Jackson, especially during the visit of the Indian Army team last year. He wished his success in his new home, and hoped that his services would; he available to the New Plymouth Club. Mt. Bridger also welcomed the Wanganui teams, and referred to the very fine feeling that existed between the two clubs. It demonstrated that the interest in hockey was a very live force when it compelled two teams to travel such a long distance to have a friendly game.
ELTHAM BEAT WANGANUI OLD BOYS,
A friendly hockey match; between Eltham; and Wanganui Old Boys was played at Eltham on Saturday, the home team securing an ©a.sy victory by a margin of four points, the scores being Eltham 7, Old Boys 3. The home players established an early lead and this was increased to six before the visitors’ account was opened. Three goals were then scored by the latter and the game concluded after a final successful scoring movement of the Eilthiam forwards'. The Rev. J. A. Rybuirn and Mr. HP. C. Johnston were the referees.
