lIAWERA MEN'S CLUB. O 'CALLAGHAN’S ELEVENTH CHAMPIONSHIP. A notable event in the history of the Hawera Men's Club was the senior championship final between O’Callaghan and J. Quin which, won on the last green by O 'Callaghan, gave him his eleventh championship in the space of twenty-two years. These are all the records on the honours board of the club. The golf was not specially good except in parts, but it was very even. The exceedingly strong wind, however, would account for this. O ’Callaghan rook the lead at the second hole and at the end of the first eighteen was three up. J. Quin, with a fine effortgenerally "wore him down and he made the match square at the sixteenth. O'Calaghan then, with a magnificent four at the 17th, was dormie one and halving the eighteenth, won the match and the championship for 1927. Only three stvmies occurred during the match and bv bad luck they were all against Quin. He was specially unlucky to have a stymie laid at the last hole. THE PLAY. MORNING ROUND.

O’Callaghan won the toss and both got away well to the right. They ran up nicely and went out in fours. O'Callaghan outdrove Quin at the second but the latter recovered. His opponent, however, with a fine left putt, took the hole in five and was one up. o'Callaghan got away well, Quin duffing and pushing his second to the right. O'Callaghan with a beauty , put his second on the green, but took three putts and still won in 5 to 6 and was two up. The fourth was played badly and was halved in 7. O’Callaghan played a nice mashie at the short fifth, Quin being short. He ran up a nice one to the green, but the former made no mistake and just missed a two and was three up. The cliff was a hard hole against the wind and neither did much good; it was halved in six. -Westward Ho was played better and both lay on the edge for three and went down in 5._ Quin played two pretty shots at Fairfield, while O 'Callaghan ‘sliced his drive and duffed an approach. Quin was on in three and made no mistake in getting his five, reducing the lead to two. O ’Callaghan had the better drive at flic ninth, Quin getting away fairly and duffing- his second. Ilis third was short and his opponent getting on in three made no mistake, getting a five ami finishing the outward journey three up. Both got away well at -Smoko, Quin being through. They both played up ami getting their putts,, halved in threes. Quin had the best of the tee shot at the l'ltli, bui O'Callaghan recovered and getting on for three halved again in 5. The Outlook was a fine effort and he narrowly missed a perfect three, bringing the margin down to two. He again had the advantage at Sandy Hook where O’Calaghan hooked his drive badly. Quin, made no mistake and putting his approach light on the pin. went down on four and the di-ficit was only one. _ At Eg-nvont both played 'indifferently and Quin took five to reach the green. O’Callaghan went out on six and was -jr ain two up. At the Lupins both got awa-y well and while O'Calaghan was short with his second Quin was on the green and going down in 4, again, reduced the margin to one. _ At the return both played indifferent! v, O ’Callaghan at the green haviiK- the advantage of a stroke and both takiim- two putts, he was once more up At the long 17th their drives were erratic but O'Callaghan got a fine second, Quin being short. The former ran up nicely and holed lus four, making him three up. Iroon was indifferently played and they both took four to reach the green and halved, in seven, the morning round leaving O’Calaghan three up. THE SECOND EIGHTEEN.

The Clin: was another win to Quin, who got away a perfect drive into the wind and both were on in three. O'Callaghan, however, took three putts and lost the hole. Westward 110 was halved m fair fives, both being 'on in three, though Quin had bad luck in having to negotiate a stymie. .. •, At Fairfield both got away well and following this up with good were just short. Quin’s approach was the better and going down m five to his opponent’s six was now only one down! Pacific was halved in six, after O ’Callaghan had duffed Ins drive, fie, however, got a fine second, while Quin topped his and both were on m five and missed eight foot putts. Smoko was poorly played, D Callaghan putting his shot badly but lie recovered well and they halved in four. The last hole was halved in six. 1 hey were near the green in three and D Callaghan with his approach laid him a stvniie and ho had to play round and could only halve, leaving ,O ’Callaghan the winner by one up for the match

and the championship. There was a fairly numerous following of members and friends and all tcok a close interest in the play.

A, Hawera men’s team of eleven played. EOtiluaan on the latter’s course at the week-end and were well beaten. The EUtliain players treated their visitors with their wonted hospitality and this Was very happily acknowledged on behalf of Hawera by Mr. Walldey, Mr. T/eo Quin replying for the Elltham club. The ladies suppl ied a nice luncheon and afternoon tea.
