WORLD OF MUSIC
OPERATIC SOCIETY. Each year the Operatic Society of Hawcra 'has donated from its profits—this is one of the tenets of its constitution—a sum to good causes in the town. The object of the society, after ensuring its future by putting away a reserve, is to so dispose of all surplus profits, and several institutions have in this wav benefited very materially This year, however, owing to adverse circumstances in the world of finance, no profit was made. But, in lieu of the usual donation, the society, with characteristic generosity, decided to stage two extra performances of “The Arcadians” for the cause of the sick and suffering in the hospital, the proceeds to be given for supplying a radio out fit. In this way patients will be enabled from their beds to lie and listen to the best music or other attractions sent out broadcast, and so have their lives cheered during their times of sickness ami suffering. It is a remarkably line ideal at which to aim and must commend itself to every member of the community. Monday and Tuesday are the days allotted. ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. Affairs are progressing exceedingly well with the Orchestral Society, and, owing largely to the increase in number of strings—they will be pretty nearly double the total of players of last year —the full orchestra will be the largest and best balanced the society lias had. The programme, too, will be the most varied, and in many ways the most interesting, and it is quite plain that progress of the most substantial kind is being mad© and that the Orchestral Society is destined to reach a place in the community never reached at any previous time in its history.. This is most satisfactory from every point of view and should attract the most cordial support from everyone in the community interested in music. The artists to bo engaged will bo decided this week, MALE CHOIR, A new departure is being made this year by the Male Choir conductor in securing'a dozen boys from the schools to sing the top part in several choral works which will be performed at the next concert. The most popular of their items will be the old favourite, typical - lv English, part song “Bells of St. Michael’s Tower” and a humourous number “Peace.” They have been rehearsed and the conductor is very pleased with the result, CHORAL EFFORT.
The selection has so far not been made for the combined choral wotlc to be performed this year, but the time is at hand to decide, and it is to be hoped that if it is possible the choice will be an oratorio. “The Messiah” would be very appropriate, but “The Creation” would mostly certainly be popular. BOYS ’ MUSIC. The orchestra at the main .school is making fine headway and proving that later it will be a valuable 'recruiting ground for the adult orchestra. It is a cause that, deserves every encouragement. The boys are just at an age when they are ready to receive the im pressions from good and careful training-
