CROQUET.
The thoughts of all croquet players are looking “lawnward” as the season comes into summer. The lawns are being “kept up” and will bo .ready lor play soon after the deciisio.ii is made to begin.
The general opinion is that the season is going to be a .specially good one. The visit of the English touring team has given ia. fillip to the enthusiasm always- in existence, and everything points to a.good and interesting season’s play.
A. visitor to H.awera and .Manaia recently was Air. Bollock, of Kelburn Club, Wellington, who was staying wi th Mr, Clague, of Allan ala. Mr, Pollock .has recently been in Melbourne and took the advantage of seeing some of the best pda-yens there. He met Air. M-illor, the champion of Australia and had altogether an interesting time. Afelbourno, he says is much greater centre for croquet than Sydney, and there a,re many fine lawns, some of them so- big as to allow a large number of games .at one time. . One feature, that struck Mr. Pollock was the fact that they play with square headed mallets which are much in favour there. He broilght home three and gave them to his club as trophies for dub matches.
