HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL.

VISITED BY MINISTER

Before joining the train at Hawera to proceed to \\ r eLLi,iig>toii to-day , Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister of Education, accompanied by his secretary (M,r. \Y« I. Deavoll) and the member lor the -district (Mr. H. G. Dickie), paid a -brief visit of inspection, to the Hawera Technical High School. The Minister was met at the school by the headmaster (Mr. A. Gray) and Messrs. R. S. -Sage- (chairman) and J. W. Harding member of the board ot management and the party made a tour of the grounds and class rooms. The Minister expressed in's pleasure in noting the- improvements effected, particularly in the environs of the building since the occasion of (hits last visit and was keenly interested in the work being carried on in the class rooms, the laboratory and the engineering department. Introduced by the principal to- each of the various instructors, he held a short conversation with each with but a momentary interruption of the work of the pupils for the exchange ot formal greetings. On the conclusion of the tour o-f inspection, the Minister, at the request of the headmaster, gave a brief .address to the pupils who assembled in tlie /hall. During the short time at his disposal, Mr. Wright excited the risible faculties of the pupils with a number of appropriate anecdotes and, lapsing into serious vein, stressed the high importance- of school education in equipping the citizens of the future with the elementary knowledge which would help -them to- fulfil their responsibilities in a worthy manner. Emphasising the need for thoroughness in every walk -of life, he urged the scholars to- devote, their whole energies to- the particular study of the moment, to strive to attain the highest pinnacle of efficiency in whatever vacation- they adopted, and by giving careful attention, to.- -assist their instructors in the •letter’s aim to afford the maximum of benefit -from the training given at th© school. In (response to the call of the headmaster the bail echoed to- rousing cheers -for Mr. Wright -and, in reply to the latter’® lead, similar acclamation was voiced in tribute to Mr. Gray, the other teachers, members of the board, M-r. Dickie and a concluding rally for “everybody.” .
