MR. AMERY IN AFRICA. MIGRATION PROBLEMS. NEED FOR RIGHT SETTLERS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT. Received 12.40 p.m. to-day. CAPETOWN, Sept. 19. The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, Secretary for the Dominions, and party have arrived at Capetown on the completion of their long South African trek, in excellent health. He was deeply impressed by the progress made since his last visit. Addressing some 1820 members of the Settlers’ Memorial Association, _Mr Amcry stressed the need for the right typo of immigration. ‘‘ If white civilisation is to survive,” he said, ‘ ‘ you must bring out a type able to undertake work already in the sphere of the whites, and trust to the steady development of the country, with an increased demand for native labour and consequential rise in its scale of remuneration, thus enabling the white man’s sphere of work gradually to extend. If South Africa reaches a stationary position with no fresh blood coming in, the country will soon cease to attract white population.” Mr Amery sails for Australia on Friday.
