“THE THIRD DEGREE.”
NEW YORK POLICE METHODS. INVESTIGATION BAULKED. NEW YORK, Aug. 31. The Norwegian Legation in Washington has appealed to the State Department on behalf of Ludwig Lee, who is under arrest in New York City on a charge of murder, and who alleges that he was tortured by the police to force a confession. Lee was born in Norway. The State Department has asked Governor Smith to look into the case. Lee, who is accused of the murder of two elderly women, alleges that the police kept him without sleep for nearly four days, questioned him almost 1 constantly, and heat him vSO severely that two" of his ribs were broken and his body was covered with a mass of bruises. He says that his limbs were twisted, causing him terrible agony. Lee’s attorney confirms his accusations, and has tried to obtain authority to have him examined by a physician and the bruises photographed. The police refuse to permit this, and several courts to which the attorney appealed held that they had no jurisdiction.
