During the hearing of a case in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, Chief Judge Dethridge said: “I am inclined to think tha-L we are a nation of spendthrifts and are going to he pulled up bv a heavy reckoning very soon.” This remark was prompted by counsel referring to Australia’s unfavourable trade balance when arguing that the progress of the secondary industries of Australia had, not been accompanied bv a decline of imports as the results of increased activity.
