The United -States Government is said to be faced with .an accumulating -series of diplomatic disputes, de.scu.'bed in some- quartern as an incipient trade war. The major developments- include : 1. A challenge by the Panama delegate- to- the League of Nations of Amenieam sovereignty over the canal zone, art sing out of Panama’s desire to control trade in the zone. 2. French discriminatory tariff’s increase of -duties- oni some- American goods to four hundred per cent. 3. Agreement- of British steel producers to pay a -rebate- to British consumers -buying only British steal. 4. Spain, Argentina and other countries delaying negotiations for the most favoured nation treaties desired by the United States. 5. Brazil, Spain, Chile, Argentina, and -other countries objecting to American sanitary embargoes against oranges, potatoes, hay, grapes, and other commodities a-s disguised protective- tariff walls. 6. European, nations generally -refused- to facilitate the work of the American treasury agents dri investigating foreign production- cost, as provided for in, the American tariff laws.
