AMERICAN LEGION.
PILGRIMAGE TO FRANCE
PREPARATIONS TO DO THEM HONOUR. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHJ LONDON, Sept. 12. The Paris correspondent or “The Times’’ states that extensive preparations are being made for the entertainment of 20,000 American exservieemen and their families, who are now approaching France in twenty liners to hold the annual convention o. the American Legion. France is determined to honour them as fuhy as she did the first legionaries in 191*7, and is erecting triumphal arches, decorating and illuminating the principal streets, and rooting in the court of the Hotel des Invalided where the Government is giving an enormous ball. Inasmuch as the legionaries announce that their visit is also a pilgrimage, the principal ceremony will be a march to the Unknown Soldier’s tomb, for which the barriers at the Arc de Triomphe will be removed for the second time since the Germans marched to the Arc in 18<0, the first being the Allied victory march in 1919. The Government is realising that it has a unique opportunity for touching the hearts of the Americans from the Middle West, and is fully using the situation. It is expected that it wili appeal to legionaries to facilitate a settlement of Franco-American finances.
