MARTIAL LAW
ENFORCED IN HANKOW. TROUBLE ANTICIPATED. RISING OF EXTREMISTS. 3Y CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 12.50 p.m. to-day. SHANGHAI, Sept. 12. Fears of an uprising of extremists resulted in strict martial law being enforced in Hankow. All Chinese were prohibited from appearing in the native quarter, whence -trouble was expected, owing to the absence of the main Hankow armies, which were participating in the Nationalists’ resumed drive towards Shantung, which was reported to be progressing in their favour. The Chinese authorities in Hankow advised the French municipality to barricade the concession. French marines landed and are picketing the concession. • ' • ** Several minor fracas have already occurred between the military and Communists. There have also been a number of stabbings and bomb throwings, causing a few casualties. The military are patrolling the streets in full strength, dealing harshly with agitators. It is considered that the foreign naval forces in Hankow are sufficient to meet the worst situation that may arise.
