USE OF SOFTWOODS.
REPLY TO MINISTER’S CRITICISM REPORT FROAT HIS OWN DEPARTMENT. - (by telegraph—press association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. With regard to the attack by the Victorian Alinister of Forests on New Zealand forestry companies and liis assertion that nowhere was a soft wood used for pulping, the Press Association has been requested to publish an extract from a report of the Alinister’s own department completely controverting his statement. The report says: ‘ I A timber which is being successfully used for building, furniture and railway purposes, boxmaking and has been proved suitable for pulping, for making both paper and artificial silk, can hardly be described as useless, and the evidence here set out justifies the conclusion that pinus insignis as grown in Australia and New Zealand compares favourably in usefulness with other soft wood timbers well known on the markets of the world.”
