Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., of Hawera, left for Wellington by the express train this morning.

Mr. J. B. Murdoch, of Hawera,. left on a. short- visit to the Tavnnamnm district- to-day. The Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C.. who has been on a visit to -his son, Dr. W. M. Thomson, of Hawera, returned to Wellington to-day. The Hon. Sir Walter Carncmss, of Elt.ham, Speaker of the Legislative Council, pmceeded to Wellington today. Mr. C. Goodson, of Hawera, who is officiating as a. judge at the bulb show being opened at Lower Hutt to-mor-row, left for Wellington by the express train this morning. He was accompanied by Mr. R. Gibson, of Manai.a. Messrs. E. Walter (Stratford), C. E. Bellringer (New Plymouth), and J. R* Hamilton (Awnrua), members of Parliament, were passengers for Wellington by the south express this morning. Mr. Hamilton was the guest during the week-end of Mr. Bellringer at New Plymouth. Mr P. E. Wright, representative of the Allan Wilkie Shakespearian Company, which is to appear in Hawera at the end of the month, is at present visiting Hawera and is staying at the White Hart Hotel.

Mr C. H. Burgees has been appointed to fil -the vacancy on the New Plymouth Harboud Board caused, by the death of Mr Newton King. The constituency which Mr Burgess will represent- includes the Taranaki County and parts of the Inglewood and Eg-mo-nt Counties.

Mr C. S. M. Hopkirk, veterinary scientist at Wallaccville laboratory, arrived in Hawera last night and went out to-day with Mr G. Ford, stock inspector, to initiate a series of experiments in vaccination of heifers against abortion. Speaking to a Hawera "Star” representative, Mr Hopkirk said that the experiment had 'been tried recently in the Wairarapa, -but results were not yet recorded. He added that it had been tried in Rhodesia some -time ago and the experts there reported most favourbly of its efficacy. Mr Hopkirk will be in the district some days in various centres.

Returned from a short trip to Melbourne, Mr A. A. Stewart, of Eltham, passed through Hawera last night on his return .homewards. Mr Stewart, who is a -prominent member of the Elthani Golf Club, saw a good deal of tournament play over there and had the privilege of playing on several of the best courses, and is enthusiastic over their excellence. He told a "Ha--wera Star” representative that there were evidences in Melbourne that business was not so-good as could be wished, as was borne out by the recent cable messages. But the country, he said, was looking very -well and -prospects were improving.

A popular member of the Hawera Scottish Society, Mrs C. Lamb, on the eve of her going on a trip to Scotland, was the recipient of a presentation at the social evening last night, when Miss Corrigan, on behalf of the members, wished Mrs Lamb bon voyage, a pleasant tour and a happy return to Hawera. Miss Corrigan referred to the keen interest, taken by Mrs Lamb in the Society and assured her that members deeply appreciated that interest and speeded her on her trip with the heartiest good wishes. Mrs and Mr Lamb briefly replied, thanking members most heartily for the gift, a handsome travelling rug, and the kindly sentiments expressed. A. number of distinguished public men arrived at Auckland by the Niagara yesterday. Sir Henry Cowan, M.P. for North Islington, is accompanied by Lady Cowan. After touring thp North Island they will leave for Australia, when Sir Henry will continue his investigations of immigration affairs. Sir William Raws, chairman of the Australian Associated Chambers of Commerce, is returning from London. The Rbht Hon. Shortt, Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1918-19, and Home Secretary Horn 1919 to 1922. afso arrived bv thp Niagara. The main purpose of his visit nis to inspect the A rap uni works on behalf, of the Armstrong, Whitworth Company. The Hon. J .M. Baddeley, Minister of Labour and Mines in New South Wales, as returning from London.
