WON BY FRANCE. LACOSTE DEFEATS TILDEN. THE' CONCLUDING GAMES. sr CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. NEW YORK, Sept. 10. France won the Davis Cup by winning the two remaining singles. Lacoiate defeated Tilden, 6—3, 4—6, 6 —3, 6—2, and Cachet defeated Johnston, 6 —4, 4 —6, 6—2, 6 —4. Lacoste won the first game on his service with the aid of Tilden’s errors. Tilden won the second with two service aces. Lacoste won the third and broke through Tilden's service to fake the fourth. The Frenchman won the fifth and Tilden the sixth. Lacoste, playing a cool, defensive game, took the seventh 4—o, Tilden making frequent errors. Tilden took the eighth and Lacoste the ninth, winning the set at 6 —3. Tilden made 26 errors and had 13 earned points. Lacoste made nine errors with no earned points. In the second set Tilden took the first three games, breaking Lacoste’s service. In the second Tilden was playing spectacularly and brought the crowd to its feet. The games then alternated to the ninth, when Lacoste broke through Tilden’s service. Tilden retaliated in the tenth, breaking through Lacoste’s service and winning the set afi 6 —4. Tilden made 20 errors with 18 earned points. Lacoste made 17 errors with 13 earned points.
Tn the third set the games alternated with the service until the seventh, when Lacoste broke through, leading by 4 —3. The Frenchman took then’ext two games, winning the set at 6 —3. Tilden appeared Jo be tiring and made frequent errors. Tilden made 29 errors and had 10 earned {joints. Lacoste made 9 errors with 3 earned points. •In the fourth set Lacoste seemed fresher than Tilden after the rest. Lacoste broke through Tilden’s service in the second game and led by 2—love. Tilden was very tiired and the Frenchman went on to> win the set by 6—2 and the match. Tilden made 23 errors and scored 10 earned points. Lacoste made 5 errors with 6 earned points. In tlie first set in the other match Johnston served first, the gaapes following the service until! tlxe fourth,when the American broke through (Joohet’s service. The latter retaliared, taking the fifth to iove, and then got into his stride, hurrying the American into uncontrolled" returns. Cloohet broke through Johnston’s service in the seventh. Johnston, rapidly losing control, made many net errors, and Oooliet won the set at o—4. Johnston made 26 errors with 9 earned points, and Cochet made 18 errors with 5. earned points. Jdims ton served on the opening of the second .set. Each broke through the other’s service until the fifth, when Johnston won this own with a desperate fight. Cochet took the sixth •playing brilliant tennis and catching Johnston clearly out of position. Cbahet, apparently disturbed by the gallery uproar, lost his own .service i n tlie eighth at the fourth to 'love and Johnston won the set at 6 —4. Johnston made 16 errors and had 12 earned points. Cbdbct made 17 errors with 8 earned points. In the third set Johnston seemed to be rapidly weakening. Cochet was very steady, and took the first four games in -succession. Johnston won the fifth and the sixth, -but Cochet broke through his opponent’s service again in the seventh and won the eighth on Jiis own and the set at 6 —2. Johnston made 20 errors and had 8 earned points. Oochet made 10 errors with 12 earned points. In the fourth set after the interval slight rain fell as play was resumed, hut soon stopped. Johnston was absolutely fatigued and barely able to cover the court. Cbohet merely parried with him, except for Johnston’s occasional flashed. When Cochet led bv o—2, Johnston fought a- terrific uphill battle, winning the eighth and the ninth, but Cachet won the tenth game, the set at 6—4, and the match •and the Davis Cup for France. Johnston made 30 errors with 12 earned .points and Cochet 28 errors with 14 earned points.*
