BLAZE AT ELTHAM.
BRIGADE’S PROMPT SAVE. j FIGHT AGAINST GALE. At 9.30 this morning a fire broke out iu rtliei waish-house attached to a six-roomed dwelling in Mail Street, Eltham, owned) by Mr. O. B. Martin, of New. Plymouth, and occupied by Mr. Geo’. Diver. The brigade effected a splendid save in spite of a high southerly wind blowing immediately on to the seat of the outbreak. The wash-house and one bedroom were gutted, but -beyond damage by smoke and water the rest of the house and its contents were saved. Airs. Diver ascribes the cause of the fire to the act of her two-year-old daughter either .dropping a lighted: match into her toy box, or playing with a copper fire which the mother had left unattended - for half an hour. The house was. insured for £7OO qnd the furniture carried a £2OO risk.
