•SOUTHERN PRODUCE MARKETS. (by telegraph—press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 0. A keen demand has set in for cocksfoot. Apparently the wet conditions recorded in England were general over Northern Europe, as the Danish cocksfoot crop has been a very light one and this usually heavy source of supply to New Zealand is likely to be unavailable this season.
The Danish quotation went up so rapidly that New Zealand merchants were caught “on the hop,’’ and there was a scramble to secure a share of local needs from stocks in store. Standard seed has gone up from bid to llld Jb in -practically a week, with little available.
Danisli is quoted at 105 s or ll£d lb, but, as against this, merchants in New Zealand who are holding stocks of Danish have been selling at lower money to quit some of their holdings. Actually, the imported seed is from Id to 2d lower value than the Akaroa seed, but the policy of selling on hand stocks of imported seed implies that there is little chance of Danish seed being imported this year. The price in Denmark is well above New Zealand parity prices to farmers, which are nominally' 7d to 7id ib on trucks.
Potatoes are a shade firmer. “Prompts,’’ per the Katoa, leaving tomorrow night, have been sold at £5 2s (id, for September £5 7s 6d, and for October £5 15s f.0.b.5.i., an advance of 2s (id a ton on the mid-week figure. Inquiries for late September and October are filtering through from the north, but merchants are chary about quoting at the present figures. Farmers are: having offers at £3 17s 6d to £4 on trucks, but the response is not very active. DAIRY PRODUCE QUOTATIONS. LONDON, Sept. 8.
