THEFT OF OVERCOAT. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 6. Protesting his innocence, Thomas Albert Cox, who had previously ,beem acquitted on a charge of stealing the Mayor’s coat, again faced- -the- Magistrate to-day, the charge being that he stole an overcoat, on August 9, the property of Kenneth Matlieson, a clothier. Accused was convicted and fined £3, in default two months’ imprisonment. • CONVERSION OF A CAR. DUNEDIN, Sept. 6. At the Police Court, James Henry Perc-iv-al Hagerty and Francis Hagerty, two young men, were charged with, converting to their own use a motor car valued at £l5O, having damaged: the car to- the extent of £4O. The car, which was taken from outside of business premises in- Stuart Street, went over a bank.

James Hagerty was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each, change and Francis Hagerty to one •month on each charge.

THE HOPE CASE. AUCKLAND. Sept. 6. John William Hope, charged with being in default on a maintenance order for 25s tier week made in England in 1921 in favour of his -alleged wife, came before Mr Hunt, S.M., in remand. Counsel for '''■accused said that he realised that- as the matter had- been fuilv investigated by Mr Poynton, S.M., in 1925. when the order was confirmed, it would be impossible for Mr Hunt to hear the case again, and asked that the. accused be .sentenced to a term of imprisonment so that he could take the case to the Supreme Court. “My opinion,” said (Mr Hunt, “i-s that he has flouted the iunsdict-ion of the courts for the last five years,” in sisutencino- Hope to six months’ imprisonment.
