A COLD SWIM.
CANADIAN MARATHON. MANY COMPETITORS GIVE UP. BY CABLE—PBJCS6 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT OTTAWA, Aug. 31. The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers in the 21 miles swim for prizes, to which William Wrigley, junior, and the Canadian National Exhibition each contributed 25,000 dollars. Only oO competitors remained in the water at the end of six hours out of 250 starters. Mayy favourites retired early. Among the early quitters were Ed. Keating, Harold Waters (New Zealand), Bvron Summers, John O Halloran, and George Clayton, but Ernst Vierkotter led hv three-quarters of a mile after 14 Kliles had been covered. Georges Michel was in sixth place.
RACE WON BY VIERKOTTER. OTTAWA, Aug. 31. A Toronto message states that Vietrkoettar worn the first prize in the Ontario swimming marathon, liis time being 11 hours 43 minutes. He finished strongly two miles ahead of the nearest dozen competitors, trod water, bowed, and threw kisses to th(3 spectators lining the shore. Geotlges Michel, of France, was second, and Arthur Compton. California, third.
