HAWERA COMPETITIONS.
TO-DAY’S SESSION. FURTHER RESULTS. EXCELLENT SCHOOL SINGING
This afternoon a .series of events wa : s staged which included two exceptionally interesting items, the unison singing for children, under 10 and under 14 yeans. It is a form of .song which suits .schools admirably, and indeed could be practised with advantage by all choirs, reminding one in many ways of the Gregorian chants. Appreciation, has been expressed of the method of announcing competitors and results on the board, on the .stage and at the side of the hall. The method was evolved by Mr. Cressey, arid worked very satisfactorily. LADY’S SOLO. Judge’s Comments.
The winner, said the judge, has a very pleasing voice, but it is not well under control, a fault which, he added, referred to both competitors. Both lie considered could do well with proper teaching.- Their trouble was in production, the voice being much, too far back in the throat. He remarked that neither had apparently given the works much study, which, of, course, was essential before they could understand what'they were singing. They just stood as though renting a lesson. The winner’s accent, enunciation and pronunciation were excellent, and. .secured full marks. He commended l her choice of song, “Songs of the Little Folk,” by Eric Coates. Results: READING AT SIGHT. (Sixteen years and over.)
Miss M. Quin, Miss L. Bullock and Mr. J. H. Forrester were recalled. CHILDREN’S UNISON SONG. (Under 10 years, .six to nine voices.) (Own .selection, unaccompanied.) The contestants were : Hawera Main School (“The Fir Tree)”, Fraser Road (“Home, Sweet Home”), Manaia (“March of the Elves”). Recalls: Fraser Road and Manaia. THIS EVENING’S PROGRAMME. To-night there will be an attractive programme, for in addition to the. numbers—Shakespearian recitation, tenor .solo, recitation (for men), vocal solo (own accompaniment), and piano solo (under 21) —there will be several interesting recalls: Children’® unison song (two events), recitation (under 16 and under 18, not humorous), reading at sight, and dialogue (humorous).
