MASSEY MEMORIAL COLLEGE.

PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION WORK.

(BY TELEGRAPH—FBEBB ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Aug. 29. At a. meeting of the Massey Agricultural College Council it was reported that a satisfactory start had been made on the.- organisation and the development of the farm, at Fitzherbert. A portion of tlwj- property had been laikl off as a dairy farm and the. erection of the necessary tsubdivisional fences was in progress. A large area of pasture had been harrowed and topdressed while the ground for root and ‘forage crops for cattle and sheep had b een ploughed . Som 45 acres of heavy land had been mole drained and- the benefits of this treatment were beginning to show. A dock of 90Q ewes had been placed on the property two months ago and lambing was now in full swing. The council have appointed Mr. W. J. McCulloch, formerly of the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North, as farm, manager. He has been directing the farming operations, for two months and 'lias gathered together a nucleus of a permanent farm staff for the working of the property. The Public Works Department is pushing on with the erection of a milking shed and dairyman’s cottage, and is also putting in a sewerage system to. serve the main buildings and the experimental dairy factory. Mr. Yates, who was recently appointed registrar, has taken up 1113 duties.

The. council is now going into the question of the staff and accommodation for teaching and holies to be in a position next March to receive at least those students who. already commenced agricultural courses _ at the Auckland and Victoria Universities. Plans are drawn up for a number of short courses in special subjects which should be valuable for practical men, but, the existing accommodation is so limited that it is not possible to offer these courses for the time being.
