LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Friday afternoon, when cradle roll day was .celebrated. Mrs Etxiyy piesided and welcomed a large 'number of mothers and children. Mrss Boucher read a very interesting paper on the Life and work of the late T. E. Taylor, who did so much for the temperance cause. Afternoon tea served by the members closed a very enjoyable afternoon.

An excellent cleric preached on Sunday night :to a. large and appreciative Auckland congregation (writes “The Man About Town” in the “Stair.”). ’Without unduly stressing what would happen to the people if they were not as good as himself,- liei inter arded his message with a good many references to the “Devil”—a mysterious device that has been used with, excellent effect throughout the ages. Warming to hi® work and ,gaining in earnestness, he suddenly appealed to- his congregation' thus: “My dear devils!” A ripple of merriment stopped as' the: assembled devils noted that they were still on earth.

Two cases of explosions in ’Waikato coal used for domestic .purposes have occurred in Hamilton. Some large lumps of coal were placed on a fire used for heating a washing copper at Mr H. M. Baker’s residence, in St. Olpbert’is Avenue, Claudelands. .and a violent explosion occurred. Burning debris was thrown about the -washhouse and a serious fire would have have occurred hut for the prompt action of the occupants. No one was injured. A .similar explosion occurred in a stove at the 'residence of Mr M. Bowe, in the same street, a few da vs previously. The content*? of the stove were thrown up the chimnev and were heard falling on the roof. Luckily .little damage was done.
