Five liners brought ,stories of one of the most terrific storms known for many years in the Atlantic Ocean. Five hundred passengers on the Martha Washington were ordered to stay below decks .while the jsb&amer was tossed like a rowboat amid mountainous waves. Five persons were slightly injured. The ]}p,&sengers prayed" while the storm was raging. Lifeboats were smashed, ventilators were blown out and the wireless wrecked. Radio operators climbed the mast and. with ropes around .their waists to prevent their being washed 1 overboard. repaired the apparatus.
The freighter Vanderwale sent n message reporting (that her lifeboats and deckhouse had gone; that the captain had two ribs broken, and that the mate was l injured. Passengers on the steamer Maracaibo once gave up all hope of reaching land, and praised the captain’s skill in saving the ship.
