The courage shown by a railway worker, Mr. C. Porter, during a fire at Mataroa last Sunday has been the subject of much favourable comment, (says the Taihape correspondent of the Auckland “Star”). A house at Mataroa occupied by Mr. A. McKenzie, caught lire early in the morning, and Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie, their 11-year-old daughter, and a young man named ’Hunt escaped hurriedly, carrying their clothes in their hands. Among those who went to help the family was Mr. Porter, a railway worker. On being told that another daughter of Mr. McKenzie was in- the house he rushed in and crawled on hands and knees through dense volumes of smoke in search of the missing girl. A few minutes later somebody called out that there was no one in the house, and he then made his escape, with the greatest ilidifficulty. He was in a’state of collapse when he came out. Later lie was informed that a mistake had been made, and that the girl for whom he had risked his life was in Palmerston North.
