TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE.
SOUTH TARANAKI BRANCH. A meeting of the South Taranaki branch of the Teachers’ Institute was held at Eltham on Saturday, Air. L. J. Eurrie presiding over a large attendance. Reports were received from the deputations appointed to solicit suppoit from the members of Parliament for the electorates of Patea, Egmont, and Stratford to the recommendations from the last teachers’ conference, and these were considered satisfactory. The following resolutions were adopted: “lYat this branch recommends that the central committee (Taranaki) he empowered to deal with business not already considered by both branches, provided the delegates from both branches agree to take the business.” “That the Education Board, through the central committee, be asked to receive a deputation from the institute to discuss the ownership and disposal of school produce.” “That this branch support the central executive in its efforts to urge upon the department the necessity of providing security of tenure for teachers.”
“That this branch enters an emphatic protest against the taking of sectional or local referendums of teachers. unless the approval of the N.Z.E.I. (Wellington) has first been obtained, and that this branch recommends, its members not to vote on such questions unless the aforesaid approval has been obtained.”
“That this branch enter a protest against appointments being made without regard to the grading list as was done recently in Southland.” “That the central committee he reouested to approach the Education Board asking that body to cease the manufacture of desks and to substitute therefore tables and chairs in furmsliing any new classrooms.”
