CUM BERRAND MATCH. HOME TEAM MAKES 154. LONDON, Aug. 20. The New Zealand cricketers met Cumberland at Whitehaven. Play could not be commenced till after lunch, when the home team went in to bat. The opening pair scored 30, but the next two wickets fell cheaply. Youren outlasted them and altogether batted one hour for his 44. hitting two fours and three threes. Shaird-low was the next batsman to make 'anything of a stand, and scored 12 from a single over off the New Zealand captain. He--lost a. promising partner in Thomas, who was dismissed by a. fine catch by McGirr at the leg boundary. Walmsley joined Shnrdlow, hut the latter lasted little longer and the last live wickets only added 52, Merritt being responsible for 'the collapse of Ihc last four. Walmsley was unbeaten with 28 to his credit. Dempster was partnered by Oliver in opening the. New Zealanders’ innings, but Oliver was dismissed when he had no more than broken Ids duck. Blunt and Dempster then gave the New ealaders a fine start, putting on 117 without further loss. Blunt was missed at 10 and is still undefeated with 64.

ENGLISH COUNTY MATCHES. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Aug. 19. In the county cricket matches rain again interfered considerably with play. Only three matches 'proceeded long enough to be counted in the championship Kent in their first innings made 340 (ITardinge 154, Ashdown 112), and in their second innings made 243 for two wickets and declared (Hardinge 82 not out, J. Bryan 129). Somerset in their first innings made 214 (Earle 51). Freeman took five wickets lor 99 runs. In 'the second innings Hardinge and Bryan put on 219 for the first wicket in two hours. Bryan played- powerfully, driving and placing to 'leg brilliantly. He hit live_ sixes and eleven fours. Earle, in his 51, included five sixes. Kor Sussex against Glamorgan, bowley look six wickets for 69 runs. Bor Glamorgan Mercer took four wickets for 4| runs and Clay four for 21. Glamorgan won. [for Notts against Norlhants, S. Staples look live wickets for 06 rimes. For Xortliants Jupp took five lor 6-. Notts won. . . For Worcester frigainst Middlesex, Root took five wickets for 69 runs, and Jewell four for 29. The game was not counted for the championship.
