MORTALITY IN LAMBS.
MANY CASES REPORTED. EFFECT OF COLD WEATHER. The cold, wet weather of last Thursday and Friday has been responsible for a heave- mortality amongst lambs on this coast. Several farmers in the district are reported to have lost a miraher, some up to 70, and it is certain the total losses will run into irfany hundreds. It is said that ewes often show a heavy lambing in bad weather, and the lambs when dropped are in many eases paralysed and unable to get up from the ground. At such- a time sheep farmers have a busy time, •and manage to save many by bringing them in to the house. Wny buck in the hill country, says a Mangamingi farmer, the lambing is later than on the open country, and in consequence they have not been so much affected. The sheep seem able to get shelter ,nore easily in the rough country. Mr. Guthrie, of Rawhitiroa, is reported to have lost, about 50, and Mr. J. T. Quin something more than that number, and no doubt there are other farmers who are similarly affected.
