Yesterday racing representatives met members of the Legislature concerned, including the Prime Minister, and the whole matter was reviewed at great length. The official announcement Irom Cabinet has been delayed by the illness of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. R. F. Bollard, but it is stated that the Waikato Racing Club paved the way out of the trouble by giviug way to the Hunt Club, and tlio latter will race on Labour Day.
TRACK NOTES AND TOPICS. (By “Limited.”) On Thursday morning the trial grass was open for" galloping, and afforded fair going. AY. Pine worked his horse-s on this track sending Sovena, Troilus and Fermanagh over five furlongs, which they traversed in 1.10. Denier and Killoch went over half-a-mi le in 53 l-ssec. Vivo and Bisox did a nice work-out together over about a mile, the la-st .six furlongs in 1.27. Silvermine and Orazone worked well without being hustled. Silver Rule and Callapat worked together on the two-year-old track, running up the straight a couple of times. Air. Fredric’s colt Seabridge was given barrier practice during the week and acquitted himself satisfactorily. AJr. A. Alexander’s shapely-looking filly by the All Black horse Pens bore out of Llanilly has been broken in and ridden, and is now a regular attendant at the tracks. She will be known as Lanore—that name having been claimed for her.
This morning, as a result of the incessant rain, all the tracks were saturated, and the sand track was the only place fit to gallop on. AY. Pine worked Fermanagh and Sovena good thrfee-quarter pace work. Bisox and A’ivo galloped five furlongs together. Bisox finished half a length in front in 1.71-5. Killoch worked well over a circuit by herself.
Gasnapper and AYar Flame took 55 sec. to run their four furlongs. Orazone and Silvermine did steady pace work. Denier worked by himself, but was not out to make time.
Reremoana. and Euphonium worked together, running home the last three furlongs fairly fast. Reremoana should be all right by Eclipse Stakes time at AA’anganui. Troilus and Airtight were associated over five furlongs run in 1.9. Hevis ran round to the five-furlong post and was picked up by Bright Glow, the mare having slightly the best at the finish in 1.10.
Partaga and Benzora worked separately. Partaga is a hard puller and requires a strong boy to keep him to steady work. He is in great heart and should show up prominently when the tracks are faster.
The popular AA’anganui sportsman Air. G. F. Aloore, paid a visit to Hawera on Thursday, and was at the racecourse to see his horses exercised. (). Cox, who supervises Air. Aloore’-s racing team, has no less than half a dozen in active commission, comprising Reremoana, Lady’ Cavendish, Dermod. Helen (who is being hacked on the roads), and the two-year-olds Kalla and Tane. The latter is Valerie’s first foal and strongly resembles liis dam ; he was late in coming in, and it will probably be the back end of the season before he faces the starter. _ S. Cleaver returned from Christcliureh on Wednesday’, bringing Passin’ Thiough with him. Passin’ Through is eleven years old, and has won during his racing career £6684 — he has been placed first twenty times, second on twenty-five occasions, and
third twenty times, whilst he lias been unplaced in seventy-four races. While many blame H. Burt, the ridei'j for the mishap that befell Passni’ Through on Saturday, it is refreshing to record that liis ownertrainer does not subscribe to this opinion; lie reckons that it was purely the old horse that faulted, and was just the luck of the game, as he considers Harry Burt is riding as well now as ever lie did. Passin’ Through was olfered for sale lor £301), but failed to find a purchaser. Mr. McKenzie’s two mares, Pint-hair and Clarinda, in charge of their trainer, T. Lloyd, were hooked to leave for Sydney yesterday. The friends of W. J. Bowden, who was thought to have been seriously injured when Perle de Leon fell with him in the National Hurdles, will be pleased to learn that he has recovered sufficiently to leave hospital, and has returned home.
Nadarino and Indian Sage are reported sold to an Australian buyer, and may leave- for Sydney shortly.
Mr. Jj. G. Clare’s house Merry Mint was successful on his first appearance in Australia. It will be remembered tluit Merry Mint finished second to Lady Limond at the last Wellington meeting.
