FIRE BOARDS.
DELEGATES MEET IN CONFERENCE. (BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. A conference of delegates from fire xniirds assembled to-day. Mr I>. E. Wilkie, who was ejected chairman, complained of the apathy of Parliament to the subject of the huge annual waste- caused bv lire, much of which could he prevented. A resolution was carried that the Act he so amended as to permit the formation of metropolitan fire boards For the four main centres. A remit was passed to amend the Act to provide for the payment of reasonable expenses in connection with the conference, also the establishment of a. central fund foil the payment of conference expenses. A demonstration of fire-fighting appliances will be given to-morrow.
