MANY PEOPLE INJURED.

VERANDAH COLLAPSES. CHARLEVILLE (Vic.), July 20. It is estimated that 40 persons were injured, several seriously, when the front verandah of a residence at Quilpic, on which a considerable quantity of furniture had been placed, collapsed during the progress of an auction sale. Under the strain the structure split in halves, and men, women, children and furniture were violently precipitated to the ground, nine feet below. Women screamed and fainted. In the confusion that followed several persons were pinned down by heavy pieces of furniture. For a quarter of an hour police and civilians were engaged in extricating the injured from the mass of wreckage. Many were bleeding freely from wounds, and others were unable to walk as the result of their injuries. The injured were taken to Quilpie Hospital for treatment.
