Judgment was given this morning in the Stratford Court by Mr R. W. 'late, S.M., in the case in which Thomas Ryan, of Ngaoro, claimed £7 4s against the Stratford Racing Club. Ryan was the owaier of a. horse, Erin-go-Bi-agh, and alleged that lie paid the jockey riding fees for three races at the January meeting, one on the first day and two on the second. On the first day his trainer, J. Thacker, of Nor--111 anby, was present when he handed over a £5 note and received £2 12s change. On the second day lie was alone when he paid. The club’s officials, Thorpe and Hoggard, denied that the racing fees were paid, bnt claimed that they gave credit. The magistrate gave judgment for £2 Bs, saying that he accepted the evidence of Thacker that the money Quid been paid on the first day. As to the paymen ts on the second day, it was the word of Ryan against that of Thorpe and Hoggard, and Ryan would be nonsuited ns to tlie balance £4 10s. Costs were .allowed Ryan on the £2 8s and costs to the racing club on the £4 16s. Members of Hawera. Operatic Society are: notified of the .special meeting to bo held to-night (Monday). On Friday next the Alanaia. School will hold a concert in the Alanaia Town Hall. The annual social and dance in connection, with the presentation of .prizes won at the Farmers’ Union, competitions will be held at the 1 Otakeho Ha; 1 ] on Friday. August 26. Further particulars will be given in late* - issues. The children’s fancy dress hall scheduled to take place at the Ohnngai hali to-morrow (Tuesday) night promises to he a success, and the committee is working hard to give the little ones a really good time.
