Mr. P. O. Veale. scientist at the Dairy Federation laboratory, received news early this morning of the .serious illness of his father in Auckland, and left by car for the north at an early hour. lie hoped to be back by Monday. At the annual meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club last night reference was made to the death of the late president, Mr Newton. King, and the iollowing resolution was passed “That the Taranaki Jockey Club requires to place on record its sense of the great loss sustained by the club through the death oi Mr Newton King. For many years he had been regarded as the club’s most prominent supporter, and as a committeeman, steward, vicepresident and president, he had been continuously in active office for long yeans. His ripe judgment in matters relating to the club’s progress will he seriousiy missed.” Members stood in silence out oi respect to his memory. In a letter received locally from Miss Leah Haughton .she remarks that she has settled down in London and been accepted by the Royal Academy after a somewhat trying examination She considers herself lucky to have the privilege of being taught bv the principal, Mr. Barton. She mentions that in the place where -she and her people are staying are Air. and Airs. Christie, Miss Slattery, and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Campbell.
