PUBLIC ACCOUNTS.
STATEMENT FOR JUNE QUARTER. (BY TELEGRAPH 'PREBB ABSOCIATI6N.) WELLINGTON” Aug. 3. The public accounts for the quarter ended June 30 show that the revenue received for the three months amounted to £4,945,689, as compared with £4,337,580 received for the corresponding; period of fast year, an increase of £608,109. The principal increases are : Customs, £329,039; .stamp and death duties, £149,767; interest on public moneys, £22,764; interest on railway capital liability, £189,447. The increase in Customs receipts is due principally to the recent heavy withdrawals from bond, and will probably be oll'set later in the year by a decrease in the returns from this source. The increase in interest on railway capital liability is largely nominal, being due chiefly to the' fact that the interest lias been received earlier tliis year than last year. The only decrease of note' is one of 632,547 in the item “recoveries on account of expenditure- during previous years.” The sum of £30,000 was ieceived under this head during the previous year in repayment of a loan made to the .Dunedin and South Seas Exhibition, and this, of course, docs not recur this year.
The expenditure lor permanent appropriations is £4,005,076, and the annual appropriation® amount to £2,088,680, a total of £6,093,756, as compared with permanent appropriations of 63,798,697' and annual appropriations of £2.018.115, a total of £5,816,812, for the corresponding period of last year. 'Hie increase of £276,944 is made up as follows; Permanent appropriations, 6206.379; annual appropriations, £70.565; total £276,944. The principal items of increase are under permanent charges of interest (£118,531) and under special Acts (£79,197). A considerable portion of interest c'ue, which is a set-off against interest paymoats, was not received until after June 30 of this vear.
Earlier payments this year ate responsible for the increase uudc-i the special Acte. The principal items of increase under the annual appropriations are; Post and telegraph ■ orbing expenses. £21,311; Department of Internal Affairs. £12,822; Defence Department, £12,465; Education Derailment, .620,532.
