MANAIA CIVIC AFFAIRS.
ADMINISTRATIVE WORK. TOWN BOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held last evening. There were- present: Commissioners N. C Lines ('chairman), 11. Mead, 3. Hickey and E. J. Massey. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. \ . H. Hobday and J. A. G. Cosgrove. Before preceding with the routine business the chairman extended a welcome to Cr. Mead on his resumption of active work with the board, following a period of illness. Similar expres.sions were voiced by Crs. Hfcke\ and Massey.
R ATEPAYERS’ PETITION. Four ratepayers petitioned that attention be given "to the bad condition of the footpath on the north side or the main road between Rangouri and Hassard Streets.” The petitioners stated that the footpath was dished and in wet weather was often lying under three inches of water and requested that the grass be removed and the footway be levelled. , . It was decided to reply -stating thatthe work would be put in hand as early as possible. MAINTENANCE WORK. The foreman (Mr J. Borrie) reported that during the month he- had been occupied mainly in maintenance work and clearing of drains. Part of the footpath, on Reimensch,older Street had also been metalled and rolled. The settling tanks had been cleaned out. Twelve new lamps had been put- m luring the month. The foreman also reported that- some of the residents' to whom notices had been forwarded were giving attention to the clearance of gorse. The report was adopted. WATER SERVICE.
Tlie chairman reported verbally that during the previous week an Investl-..-vation of the water reticulation near tlie intake had been made -by Cr_s. Hobday and Cosgrove and himself. It was found that owing to tlie erosion of the river bank the stability ot a portion of tlie pipe line leading from the .settling tank was being threatened. After consultation with the consulting engineer (Mr. J. Sturrock) it. bad been decided to erect a reinforced wooden wall to protect the pipe- line and the work was being proceeded " Tbo action taken was endorsed by the board.
SANITARY INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
The sanitary inspector (Mr F. G. Coleman) reported that -during the period of May 1 to July 31, one case of pneumonia had been notified m the town district. One plumbing and drainage work with 100 feet ot dram had been inspected, together with -seven other sanitary inspections Under the provisions of the Sale of Foods and Drik'.s Act one -sample of bread bad lyeeiT taken and tlie premises of one baker, three butchers and one. fruiterer had been inspected. The report was received. FINANCE. A statement of receibps for the month gave the following details: Rates, general £37 10s, water an sewerage £44 19-s Id, total £Bl U* lid; licenses and rents, cow tion £6 os. reserves £5, hall £4l 10s. drivers os. transfer publicans license £2, total £55; sundries, £l2 16s, fraud total £149 15s lid.
