SUZANNE’S MANTLE.

POSSIBLE SUCCESSOR. CECILE AUSSEN’S CLAIM. It is possible that the legitimate successor to Mile. Suzanne Lenglen has been discovered in Fraulein Ceeile Aussen, a pretty 18-year-old German girl, and it is singular that she should make so great an impression at St. Cloud, Paris, the scene' oi so many of the mercurial French girl’s triumphs, says a writer in an English journal. Although she has won several German championships, and had competed in the Riviera, her game previously was so undistinguished that she was not regarded seriously by anyone.

But Fraulein Aussen was determined to improve, and she placed herself unreservedly in the hands of Howard Kinsey, one of the American amateur players who joined the Lenglen “stable” when the Frenchwoman turned professional. By diligent practice with the American she has improved out of all knowledge, and is now clearly entitled to the distinction of being known as “the Germ a n Len gle n. ” Her victory over Mile. Contostavlos, who is regarded as the best lady amateur in France, was really convincing, and was of a dramatic clinracter. She is the first German girl to play in Paris since the war, and to do so in the presence of a wildly-excited crowd, who n aim rally desired the victory of their re present afve, and to meet, in her first championship, a plavcr of the calibre of her rival was sufficient to intimidate her. Fraulein, Aussen. however, displayed great steadiness, and proved a fine tactician, with the result that she created a real surprise. The little girl from Cologne appears destined to he- a real favourite everywhere. She is not at all likely to he- spoiled by success; in fact, in character and general disposition she is not unlike Renorita do- Alvarez, that altogether charming Spanish girl.
