Two hundred and fifty men employed at Pukemiro coal mine went on strike on Wednesday morning, and the colliery is still idle. The dispute concerns the employment of two men on a coal face. The union contends that these men have been put on to the work out of their turn, and asks that two others, Slater and Bronnigan, who are at present trucking, should have, preference. The engineers are not- affected; and the officials are keeping the mine safe. A Huntly telegram last night stated that the management has given way in respect of one man. AL*. Wight, chairman of directors of the Pukemiro Coal Company, said that things had reached breaking point after long dictation bv the miners as to who should he employed. The directors had to decide whether the mines were to he mastered by the men or by the company. The co’mpanv was not going to submit to it. and the matter would have to be fought out.
