BIGAMY ADMITTED

At the Police Court, Thomas Dawson Smith, aged 61, a company manager, pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. He admitted that he was married at Birkenhead, England, where he had a good business, 42 years ago; also that he married a widow at Auckland in 1914. He had a family of seven children, and had lived happily with his family for 21 years, when, owing to his wife’s changed attitude, he emigrated in 1912. At a church bazaar he met a widow, whom he subsequently assisted in her business, and for purely business reasons and to prevent people talking he married her. POLICE CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 1. At the Police Court, Patrick Byrne, a fireman on the steamer Waipori, pleaded guilty to assault on Constable Parkinson on July 9, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. THEFTS FROM DANCE HALLS. WELLINGTON. Aug. 1. Thefts of overcoats and other articles of clothing from dance halls resulted in two labourers. Roy William Spencer, aged 28,' and Herbert Stewart, aged 361 appearing at the Police Court today. Spencer pleaded guilty to seven charges involving articles valued, at £22 ss, while Stewart admitted two charges of theft and three of receiving. Spencer iras sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, and Stewart to six months’, both with hard labour.
