MOTORISTS’ INTERESTS.
SOUTH TARANAKI AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. DELEGATES MEET AT ELTHAM. Members of the Hawera executive and tlie Eltham Committee of the .south Taranaki Automobile Association met at Eltham last evening for me monthly meeting. There were present- Messrs. S. C. Tonks (vicepresident), It. H. Leece, A\ . H Cailaghan, J. A. Duffill, \\ . G. IValkley (secretary) of Hawera, and I. i>Crump, M. E. McGarry, M. J- Instram and C. H. INiiite (Eltham). Mr. Walk ley reported regarding the result of the "representations made by che deputation which waited oil the Main Highways Board in reference to ohe elimination of the South Road and other level crossings. He referred to the decision of the Local Bodies A*ssociation to contribute a total of 10 pei cent to the cost of the elimination and the attitude adopted by the board in reference to the offers of the Hawera Borough and County Councils. The board had threatened to divert its funds to other districts in view of the small amount offered. A motion deploring the proposed diversion of funds was carried, it- being decided to communicate the association’s resolution to the board. A letter from the Eltham Progress Committee drew attention to the desirability of erecting signs at the intersection of Bridge and High Streets. It was also advised that the Borough Council had established a camping site in Tauifiata Park, hut at present there were no signs indicating the spot. Some discussion ensued upon the dormant state of the Eltham committee, it being finally decided that Mr. Crump would arrange a meeting of Eltham members, from which a new executive would he -set. up and the question of signs gone into. _ As a result of a letter setting forth the claims of a certain insurance, com-: panv, the whole matter of fire insurance was discussed, Mr. Tristram finally moving that insurance with Llovcls he discouraged. The chairman thou"h it better to await the report of the delegates to the annual conference, and, on the understanding that the- delegates would have no power to commit members, the motion was withdrawn, no action being taken .Vs recommended in a. letter from the North Jsland- Motor Union, it- was dc/'idcd to write to the Maoaia, Opunakc and Normanbv Town Boards, pointing out the desirability of prohibiting live stock within their areas from wandering on the roads. Messrs. E. P. Cox and W. O Callaghan were appointed delegates to the annual conference at Napier.
The matter of appointing a canvasser was loft to the central executive. ft was decided to ask the North Ts*1 and Motor Union to bring before the Government- the lack of control of traffic and wandering stock on main and country roads, and to urge the necessity for the establishment of motor cycle police patrols. It- was also decided to draw the attention of Taranaki local bodies to the suggested laxity of traffic control after dark. The absence of regulations governing dazzling headlights was referred to by Mr. Tristram, and it was decided to draw the attention of the Government to the matter. The matter of revising the- list of hotels offering a reduced rate to members of the association was referred to the secretary.
