Eric George Stewart, aged 23, pleaded guilty at the Police Court to attempting to obtain, with intent to defraud, £SO from 'he' New Zealand Natives’ Association by falsely representing that a person named L. G. Morrow, of Manurewa, had entered prior to the date and closing time of a crossword competition, of which the accused was the „adjudicator, and that Morrow was the winner of the first prize of £SO. Chief Detective Cummings said that when the puzzle solutions were received and after the closing date, the papers were gone through by a Mr Fowler and the accused. ' Fowler had to leave one night when the papers were beingperused. Stewart continued the search for a correct solution, but he did not find one, but, knowing wkat.it was, filled in a form and afterwards reported that L. G. Morrow, a navvy of Manurewa, was thew inner. Morrow was written to, and a reply was received asking that the cheque be sent by post to Newmarket P.O. A letter was so directed without the cheque. When Stewart called at the post office he was met by a detective and admitted that there was no Morrow at Manurewa. A bad feature of tlie case was that Stewart knew the solution and put it in himself, hoping to get. the prize, thus taking down hundreds of people who had sent in answers to the puzzle, accompanied by one shilling. Stewart was fined £lO.
