CONVICTS’ GALLANTRY.

DROYvNING MAN RESCUED. INCIDENT IN PRISON QUARK)

LONDON, July 20. Convicts displayed great gallantry in rescuing one of their number who had fallen into a pool of stagnant water nearly 50 feet deep at the prison quarries at Peterhead. When the accident was observed a young convict immediately dived from a- height of 10 feet into the water. He was greatly handicapped, however, by the weight' of his boots and thick clothing .and fearing that both the men would sink another convict plunged in, and between them they kept the first convict, who could not swim, afloat. The three men were in positions of considerable peril, and to save them the other convicts of the squad formed a. hand-to-hand chain down the ledge until they were ahle to reach and rescue them.
