William Roberts, ex-convict with many aliases, was -sentenced this morning to .six months' imprisonment ior presenting a valueless cheque at a. local hotel after borrowing a blank cheque at Waugaehu. The •accused was released from the Wellington gaol at the beginning of the present month, and had nine previous convictions for faJ.se pretences covering over thirty charges. The accused stated to the bench that he had won over £l2O at the Wellington races over Nnkmnai s victories and had been drunk ever .since. ALLEGED ASSAULT AND I! ORRERY. NELSON’, July 27. A further move to clear uj> the Ryan mystery (Ryan was found in a Nelson hotel with a fractured skull and other injuries) was made by the police today. when Clhas. Hogg was charged with assaulting Ryan at Upper Monte re and of robbing him of £2O. The accused was remanded to August 10.
