Cabled advice has been received of the death on Sunday last, at Maine, U.S.A., of Air. Frederick T. Steinway, president of the world-famous firm ot piano manufacturers. Air. J. B. Murdoch left Hawera by mail train this morning for Wellington. H© will return on Friday.
Air. C. Goodson, of Hawera, was a passenger bv the mail train for Wellington to-day. He anticipates returning within a few days.
Air. S. L. Cummane, stationmaster at Kaikohe, who has been on a brief visit to Hawera, left on his return today.
Comrade C. S. Mahoney, of the Oh a wo. Troop Legion of Frontiersmen, was the guest of honour at- a farewell gathering held in the Foresters’ Had, Hawera, last evening, in view of his forthcoming departure for “Wellington. In proposing tlie toast “Our Guest, Lieut. C. N. Vickridge, who presided, referred to Sergeant-Alajor Mahoney s remarkable war record, including the Matabele, the Boer a and the Great European conflicts, and said that, besides having earned, respect on that account, the sergeant-major was also a popular figure in civil life. On behalf of the troop the speaker presented the sergeant-major with a gold watch, inscribed: “To Comrade Alahoney from the Ohawe Troop.” Other toasts honoured were “The King,” “The Legion,” “Other Troops,” ““Visitors, “Entertainers,” and “The Press, ' the list being suitably combined with items of song and story.
